Trick Or Treat Giveaway 2017: Teach Your Dog to Ring a Bell

October 20, 2017 by Polly Pocket

In honor of the upcoming holiday…Halloween…we are once again participating in the Trick or Treat Giveaway and Blog Hop!

The Trick or Treat Giveaway Hop is co-hosted by our amazing friends over at Kol’s Notes and Beagles & Bargains.

How does the Trick or Treat Giveaway Hop work?

Fifteen amazing bloggers (ChiPets included) created posts dedicated to teaching you one of their favorite dog TRICKS.

The TREAT is, every one of of those blogs also has an option for you to enter an amazing giveaway with nearly $850 in prizes which is open from October 20th until October 30th, 2017.

Get it? Trick or Treat!

To make it easy, we’ve even taken the time to link to each blog’s trick for you at the end of this post.

PLUS, there will be a bonus giveaway happening only on Instagram, so be sure to follow us so you don’t miss out!

Now, for our TRICK:

How to Teach Your Dog to Ring a Bell

Teaching your dog to ring a bell is a fun and simple behavior that can bonus as a way for your dog to tell you if they want something (maybe put the bell by your back door, and use it as a “potty bell”!).  Now, there are a lot of different options for bells…especially if you plan on using the bell as a “potty bell”.  BUT, we use a service bell.  Simply follow the three easy steps below, and your dog will be ringing a bell in no time!

Step 1:  Choose a delicious treat and a non-distracting environment.  If you have more than one dog, it is best to train this trick (or any trick) with only one dog at a time.

Step 2:  With a treat in one hand, and the service bell in the other, place the bell in front of your dog.  If your dog is naturally inquisitive with their feet, this may be all you need to do to cause your dog to touch the bell…especially if you’ve already taught tricks like shake or wave.  Simply give them the treat when they lift up their paw and/or touch the bell.  If they don’t lift up their paw, it’s okay to use your hand to gently lift their paw and give them the treat.  You can also try gently touching their paw with the bell to assist them with lifting their paw, but always follow with a treat.

Step 3:  When your dog starts understanding that raising their paw means treat, wait a little longer for the touch of the bell, then treat.  Repeat, repeat, repeat, and then wait for “proper form”.  Did the bell ring?  Yes!  Treat!  No?  Wait for your dog to try again.

Always remember to keep things positive when you are teaching a new trick!

We are working on teaching this trick. I want my dog to ring the bell to go outside for the bathroom. We are just doing a command “go outside” then I ring the bell and we go out. I think my dog is picking up on what this means cause sometimes she will ring it herself, then I yes and reward her.

  78. Susan P. says

  88. Jennifer A says

    October 20, 2017 at 10:53 am

  89. Heather D says

Does the bell have any practical purpose?

    • Polly Pocket says

      October 20, 2017 at 9:52 am

Hi Swayzebear! Yes! We didn’t explain the practical purpose behind the bell in our video tutorial, but in the written step-by-step we mention that you could use the bell as a “potty bell”. But, it can also be a trick just for fun!

  94. Jodi STone says

This is a very useful trick, especially if your dog won’t bark to go out. Great job!!

  95. Mel says

    October 20, 2017 at 8:24 am

We’ve never have tried this as he stands at the door or he ruffles the “blinds” to signal he needs to go outside but this would be good to try 🙂

  96. Scott Davis says

    October 20, 2017 at 7:24 am

    My pup won’t ring a bell 🙁

  97. Karen Porm says

    October 20, 2017 at 7:21 am

Yes, we do this but with a wind chime on the second doorknob (french doors) to the backyard. He can touch the wind chime to make noise easier than pushing a bell. Works great. This way I know if he’s just staring out the door or if he wants to go out. Easy to teach with this method.

  98. Rachel Michele Monn says

    October 20, 2017 at 7:20 am

We have never tried ringing a bell before. She’s a little spoiled so she has never needed to use one!!
