Now, for our TRICK:
How to Teach Your Dog to Ring a Bell
Teaching your dog to ring a bell is a fun and simple behavior that can bonus as a way for your dog to tell you if they want something (maybe put the bell by your back door, and use it as a “potty bell”!). Now, there are a lot of different options for bells…especially if you plan on using the bell as a “potty bell”. BUT, we use a service bell. Simply follow the three easy steps below, and your dog will be ringing a bell in no time!
Step 1: Choose a delicious treat and a non-distracting environment. If you have more than one dog, it is best to train this trick (or any trick) with only one dog at a time.
Step 2: With a treat in one hand, and the service bell in the other, place the bell in front of your dog. If your dog is naturally inquisitive with their feet, this may be all you need to do to cause your dog to touch the bell…especially if you’ve already taught tricks like shake or wave. Simply give them the treat when they lift up their paw and/or touch the bell. If they don’t lift up their paw, it’s okay to use your hand to gently lift their paw and give them the treat. You can also try gently touching their paw with the bell to assist them with lifting their paw, but always follow with a treat.
Step 3: When your dog starts understanding that raising their paw means treat, wait a little longer for the touch of the bell, then treat. Repeat, repeat, repeat, and then wait for “proper form”. Did the bell ring? Yes! Treat! No? Wait for your dog to try again.
Always remember to keep things positive when you are teaching a new trick!

Neither of my dogs can do this.

My dog does know this trick, and this is exactly how we did it!
My parents taught our dog this trick along with my brother’s dogs
No, my dog doesn’t know how to this trick
I have not tried to get any of my dogs to ring a bell. It would come in handy for those that don’t give warning to go out to potty, though.
Thank you for the chance!
No he doesn’t know this trick!
My dog does not know this trick.
Mine doesn’t do much besides his basic commands, and he refuses to do them if there isn’t a treat waiting. Hopefully that changes in time.
This is so cute. My dogs do not know this trick, but I definitely will be teaching them this.
Awesome trick! My dog doesn’t know this one.
The pups don’t know this trick probably becasue they use a dog door but if they knew this trick they eoukd likely obsessively ring the bell since they are in and out the door all day.
My little Bella never tried this one, but it looks like fun to teach her!
Mine doesn’t ring a bell, she just whines when she wants to go out
I need to start teaching this, stat. My escape artist pug also likes to jump at people who visit, it’s a real hassle.
My dog doesn’t do any tricks.
I haven’t taught my dogs this trick yet but I think it would be a really good one for them to learn.
We are working on teaching this trick. I want my dog to ring the bell to go outside for the bathroom. We are just doing a command “go outside” then I ring the bell and we go out. I think my dog is picking up on what this means cause sometimes she will ring it herself, then I yes and reward her.
My dog does not know this trick, but I might try to teach it to her 🙂
My dog doesn’t know this trick yet!
Never tried this trick with my dog, but I love it. Great tips!
My dogs don’t know this trick.
Thanks for the cool trick idea 😀 It seems easy to learn too. I’ll have to try it out.
No my dog doesn’t know this trick.
My dog does not know this one. I can’t wait to teach her though. I would love for her to ring a bell if she needs to go outside.
This looks like a fun trick, but I haven’t taught my dog yet.
My dog does not know this trick
Love this trick! I get pretty demanding and start tapping the bell more than once 😛
My cat liked dog never did this once.

I love this and your dog is so cute doing it. Great post, thanks for sharing!
Odin DID know this trick and I had to unteach it to him- he would use it for treats , going out, even the cat bothering him. I had to put the bell away!
Grady knows this with a “that was easy” button from staples 😀 It’s a crowd pleaser for sure!
Our dogs do not know this trick. One of them is very good at “shaking hands” so he might enjoy this twist on it.
My dogs can do it, but Balto likes to run wild when he rings the bell.
I think my dog would be smart enough to ring a bell for a treat. She learned the puzzle treat board in no time at all.
No, he doesn’t know how to do that.
Petals the Pug knows no tricks. She is a wild child. Ugh
This is such a cute trick! I think I might try teaching both of my dogs how to do this! 🙂
We have not tried this trick
My two dogs do not know this trick but i have never thought about using a bell. If they need to go outside they just cry at the door.
I might try this method to teach him-good trick!
No, but they use their loud mouths!
Cute trick! Will think of teachin him that!
I use treats and lots of positive reinforcement but we haven’t worked on many tricks yet. Thanks
No, they just use their voices.
My dogs know this trick and learned the same way.
No my dog can’t do this trick but maybe she will in the future.
Our new puppy was born on 10/19 so he doesn’t know any tricks yet but we have high expectations for him.
i have tried this with my girls several times with different bells and they still did not get the hang up it. i gave up after months of trying.
Pawsome! One of the humans’ chickens, Jagger, knows how to ring a bell. BOL!

No, I don’t this would be useful for us. I think they would just ring for food!
My dogs don’t know this trick, but actually I’ve been teaching one of our cats. We saw the Amazing Acro Cats and after seeing those cats ringing bells and such, I thought I’d try teaching my kitten, Kotoha. She kind of understands, but I need to work more with her.
No she doesn’t know this trick but I’m sure my kids will love to help teach her with these steps!
We don’t have a door bell but plan on installing one very soon, so I will be taking these tips into consideration if my dog reacts to it.
We’ve never tried this one, so no.
My lab Cooper does not know this trick yet.
My dogs don’t know this trick yet
thisis not a trick i have ever seen done, but let’s try!
I don’t have a bell for my dog to ring. Maybe I will look into it.
My dog doesn’t know this one. I can see it being helpful, however, so will have to work on it!
we got this
Will have to try this thanks
My dog does not know this trick, but she waves with 1 paw and gives high five with the other, so we are halfway there. We’ll give this a try.
I think my cats would learn this trick faster than the dog! The dog does ring bells on the door to go outside by pawing at them, though.
I’ve never even tried to teach my dog to ring a bell. He would probably drive me crazy if he did learn how to do it!
I really want to try this with our chihuahua. Thank you for the tips. I have seen videos of dogs ringing a bell for a treat but it seemed too advanced.
This would be great for my Chihuahua/Boston mix. Hopefully I can do it!
My dog does not know this trick.
We will try this soon.
We ring our doggy doorbell. It isn’t to tough to learn to ring bells, so I think many dogs can do it.
My dog doesn’t know this trick but it would be awesome if she did.
My dog does not know this trick.
Yes, my dogs know this trick. We use it for tricks during k9 therapy visits. We taught it the same way.
Dexter doesn’t know this one but we recently got a “doggy doorbell” and I would love if he would actually use it. He refuses and scratches the wall next to it instead when he wants to go out :::facepalm:::
My dog could probably learn this one. She is always eager to please her humans.
Does the bell have any practical purpose?
Hi Swayzebear! Yes! We didn’t explain the practical purpose behind the bell in our video tutorial, but in the written step-by-step we mention that you could use the bell as a “potty bell”. But, it can also be a trick just for fun!
we do not know this one yet
My dog doesn’t know this yet!
We’ve never tried using a bell since they have their own ways of letting us know they want something
This is a very useful trick, especially if your dog won’t bark to go out. Great job!!
We’ve never have tried this as he stands at the door or he ruffles the “blinds” to signal he needs to go outside but this would be good to try 🙂
My pup won’t ring a bell 🙁
Yes, we do this but with a wind chime on the second doorknob (french doors) to the backyard. He can touch the wind chime to make noise easier than pushing a bell. Works great. This way I know if he’s just staring out the door or if he wants to go out. Easy to teach with this method.
We have never tried ringing a bell before. She’s a little spoiled so she has never needed to use one!!
