Trick Or Treat Giveaway 2018: Teach Your Dog to Wear a Hat

October 18, 2018 by Porky Pig

Trick Or Treat Giveaway 2017

In honor of the upcoming holiday…Halloween…we are once again participating in the Trick or Treat Giveaway and Blog Hop!

This year, we partnered up with NINETEEN amazing dog blogs to bring you 13 days of awesome dog tricks, yummy dog treats, and nearly $1500 worth of fun and prizes!

How does the Trick or Treat Giveaway Hop work?

Nineteen awesome bloggers (ChiPets included) created posts dedicated to teaching you one of their favorite dog TRICKS.

The TREAT is, every one of of those blogs also has an option for you to enter an amazing giveaway with nearly $1500 in prizes which is open from October 18th until October 30th, 2017.

Get it? Trick or Treat!

To make it easy, we’ve even taken the time to link to each blog’s trick for you at the end of this post.

PLUS, there will be bonus giveaways happening only on Instagram and Facebook, so be sure to follow us so you don’t miss out!

Now, for our TRICK:

How to Teach Your Dog to Wear a Hat

Teaching your dog to wear a hat is a fun and simple behavior that can bonus as a way for your dog to have an INSTANT Halloween costume!  Now, there are a lot of different options for hats…especially if you plan on using the hat as a costume.  BUT, we used a beanie-style hat so that it doubles as an ear-warmer for the colder months.  Simply follow the five easy steps below, and your dog will be wearing a hat in no time!

Step 1:  Choose a delicious treat and a non-distracting environment.  Introduce your dog to the hat with the yummy treat.  Sometimes dogs are scared of new objects, so make sure your dog likes his or her hat before moving to Step 2.

Step 2:  With a treat in one hand, and the hat in the other, pretend to put the hat on your dog.  Simply give them the treat for allowing you to place the hat partially (and loosely) on them.  If they don’t back away, paw at the hat, or otherwise act nervous, then move to Step 3!

Step 3:  Now it’s time to lure your dog into the hat.  If it is a full beanie hat (like ours), you want them to choose to place their face in the hat by following the treat.  If it is a hat that is simply placed on their head, just lure them through the straps that will keep the hat in place once it is on their head.

Step 4:  Repeat Step 3 and gradually put the hat further on your dog (tighten the chin straps or, in our case, put the beanie further over your dog’s head).  If they don’t back away, paw at the hat, or otherwise act nervous, then move to Step 5!

Step 5:  Gradually increase the amount of time your dog will wear the hat.  Make sure to give intermittent treats for not shaking their head or trying to get the hat off.  And always remove the hat before your dog decides they’ve had enough (or before you run out of treats)!

Always remember to keep things positive when you are teaching a new trick! And have fun!

My three Coonhounds are okay with wearing dog coats, but I haven’t been able to get them to keep anything on their heads. Even the hoods from the coats when it’s really cold. I’d love it if they would let me put hats on them. I have some great holiday-themed hats and headbands for them that we’re lucky to get a single picture of on them. They typically pull off anything I put on them right away.
