Trick Or Treat Giveaway 2016: Teach Your Dog to Wave

October 20, 2016 by Polly Pocket

Trick Or Treat Giveaway 2016

trickortreatsponsordisclaimer

In honor of the upcoming holiday…Halloween…we are participating in our first ever Giveaway and Blog Hop!

The Trick or Treat Giveaway Hop is co-hosted by our amazing friends over at Kol’s Notes and Beagles & Bargains.

How does the Trick or Treat Giveaway Hop work?

Fifteen amazing bloggers (ChiPets included) created posts dedicated to teaching you one of their favorite dog TRICKS.

The TREAT is, every one of of those blogs also has an option for you to enter an amazing giveaway with nearly $600 in prizes which is open from October 20th until October 30th, 2016.

Get it? Trick or Treat!

To make it easy, we’ve even taken the time to link to each blog’s trick for you at the end of this post.

PLUS, there will be a bonus giveaway happening only on Instagram, so be sure to follow us so you don’t miss out!

Now, for our TRICK:

How to Teach Your Dog to Wave

Teaching your dog to wave is a fun and simple behavior that can open the door to teaching other tricks.  Now, typically when you wave, you use your whole hand.  BUT, since we’re small, we use just one finger to cue the wave.  Simply follow the three easy steps below, and your dog will be waving in no time!

Step 1:  Choose a delicious treat and a non-distracting environment.  If you have more than one dog, it is best to train this trick (or any trick) with only one dog at a time.

Step 2:  With a treat in your hand, reach toward your dog’s paw.  When they lift up their paw, give them the treat.  If they don’t lift up their paw, it’s okay to use your hand to gently lift their paw and give them the treat.

Step 3:  When your dog starts anticipating the treat and starts lifting their paw before your hand gets close to their paw, you can now start adding your cue (again, we use the word “wave” and one finger, but you can use whatever feels comfortable to you).  Repeat, repeat, repeat, and soon you will have the wave on cue!

Always remember to keep things positive when you are teaching a new trick!

Adorable!! Well done cuties 🙂 I’d love to teach my dogs this trick. I will have to work with them on it 🙂 Thanks for the training tips!

My dogs only know to sit and they do that when they want to lol. I think it is cool the way they taught them

  5. Edye says

    October 29, 2016 at 10:28 am

This would be a gift for my friends dogs to share. They know many tricks.

  6. Wendy R. says

Ha! I like the wave trick. Definitely want to teach my dogs this one.

  7. Linda Szymoniak says

    October 28, 2016 at 10:19 pm

My dogs don’t know this, exactly, but they know how to shake paws and I’ve been working with them on high-5, so I don’t think it would be that much of a stretch for them to wave from that.

  8. Kim Cowgar says

    October 28, 2016 at 8:41 pm

No dog, I’d love to win the gc and any dog treats I win will go to local shelter. My cat can high five which is close.

  9. Bargnhtress says

  14. Carolyn says

    October 27, 2016 at 7:56 pm

My dog waves when she thinks she is being ignored (ie not getting fed dinner fast enough or given the treats she wants).

  15. Lindsay Pevny says

    October 27, 2016 at 7:45 pm

Cow just recently starting waving, I adapted it from Shake by taking my hand away instead of shaking her paw. I also try to reward her highest waves, so her waves have been getting wavier these past few days. Such a cute trick!

  16. Michele Cupp says

    October 27, 2016 at 6:06 pm

She does know this trick. We actually just discovered it by accident, it seemed to be a natural tendency of hers, so I went with it and rewarded her for it.

  17. Colleen Boudreau says

    October 27, 2016 at 4:29 pm

My dog doesn’t know this trick. I have a 4 year old Boxer, & she’s really hyper and gets excited easily.. so sometimes she has difficulty trying to pay attention long enough to learn tricks lol.

  18. Tammy Horn says

    October 27, 2016 at 9:16 am

Yes, my dog know how to wave. I did not teach her this way though, I just captured her with the wave, and marked the behavior with a cue. She now randomly goes up to people and waves. 🙂

  19. Kristy Balser says

    October 27, 2016 at 5:43 am

  21. Llisa Spencer says

    October 26, 2016 at 10:12 am

Stormy does know this trick! He started learning left and right shake and was so excited for his dental treats, it quickly morphed into a super excited waving motion. Easy to link different tricks when you have a VERY food motivated Chihuahua ?

  22. Mallory H. says

    October 26, 2016 at 10:12 am

My pups do not know this one – My chichi can ‘hold my hand’ though, which is super cute!!

  23. Marilyn Nawara says

My dog will give me her paw so this should be an easy trick to learn.

  34. Jan K says

    October 24, 2016 at 12:18 pm

The cat wanted to wave too, right? That was funny! I’ll have to try this trick with Luke, we like to do some simpler ones sometimes; especially after we’ve bombed on a more complicated one (we had to put both roll over and turn off lights aside due to lack of progress).
Luke does a high five. Is it kind of the same thing, getting them to do a similar motion, but without meeting my hand? I just want to be sure not to get him confused on the two!

    • Polly Pocket says

      October 25, 2016 at 8:12 am

LOL, yes, our cat waves too, and he wanted the treat! Yes, wave is similar to High Five. To avoid confusion, make sure your hand signal looks different. And be sure you don’t use your High Five cue to start the Wave. Once your dog is waving, you can then “test” to make sure he knows the difference by asking for one, then the other.

  35. Debra Guillen says

    October 24, 2016 at 9:39 am

My dog does not know this trick.

  36. Laurajj says

    October 24, 2016 at 9:22 am

Oh the waves are so precious! I would love to teach ours to do that! Cute!!! Ours will sit on command…or at least most of the time. If there is a squirrel or rabbit around…its hopeless. LOL

    • Polly Pocket says

      October 25, 2016 at 8:13 am

Thank you! It would be hard for any dog to focus on a trick with a squirrel or a rabbit around! LOL

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them

  50. Talent Hounds says

    October 23, 2016 at 6:31 am

I taught Kilo to shake his right and hi 5 his left this way but now he gets muddled with cues and will offer “say your prayers” ie both paws standing or shake or hi 5. I have not quite got him to say seated and wave one paw. We keep working on it as he loves doing tricks and getting treats. We wanted to learn “sit pretty” and wave too but he still can’t seem to balance.

    • Polly Pocket says

      October 23, 2016 at 7:42 am

Putting tricks under stimulus control is probably the hardest thing about training tricks. We learned that was important (and how to do it) after teaching a big dog to close cabinets. You only get your head closed in a cabinet once before you learn stimulus control! (P.S. it was a human who got shut in the cabinet, not a Chihuahua)

  51. Robin says

    October 22, 2016 at 8:43 pm

So cute! I have not taught this trick to my kitties, but I think that you have done a great job teaching your pups. Excellent giveaway too! What pet wouldn’t want $300 in treats from PetSmart? 🙂

  52. Christy Graham says

    October 22, 2016 at 6:25 pm

My pup waves.. but we say paw five!

    • Polly Pocket says

      October 23, 2016 at 7:42 am

      That’s a great cue!

  53. Jana Rade says

    October 22, 2016 at 8:44 am

Such a cute trick! Teaching tricks is great for many reasons.

  54. Jamie Williams says

    October 22, 2016 at 6:34 am

No i never could teach that. But he does know how to shake both his paws.

    • Polly Pocket says

      October 22, 2016 at 6:36 am

If you can teach shake, you can teach wave! It’s just as simple, and having shake first even makes it easier!

  55. The Daily Pip says

    October 22, 2016 at 5:53 am

We are still working on shake, but once we master that we will give this a try!

  56. Hindy Pearson says

    October 22, 2016 at 1:56 am

Neat trick! I taught my dog “paw” so he should be waving on no time.

  57. Anne-Marie Tvete says

    October 21, 2016 at 11:58 pm

It’s not a trick I ever thought of teaching my dog. But I will give it a try.

  58. Iryna says

    October 21, 2016 at 9:02 pm

Will work on this one 🙂

  59. Thomas Murphy says

  60. Billy Lilley says

  61. Daniel Scott Thuet says

  62. Jodi Stone says

  63. Joely Smith says

Well heck that looks and sounds easy enough! Will give it a try with our Lyla. Our Glover (RIP) could high five he was so sweet and cute.
Thanks for the chance to win these great prizes!

  68. Kevin says

Unfortunately my dog doesn’t know any tricks. I’ve tried to teach her several times in the past but she just doesn’t get it.

    • Polly Pocket says

      October 21, 2016 at 5:25 pm

This is a great trick to try for a dog who can be difficult to train new behaviors. It is simple and requires a lot of rewards, so most dogs love it!

We wish it was us, but the rules say we can’t enter! 😉

  73. Rachel says

    October 21, 2016 at 7:57 am

Oh my goodness, that video was so cute and I loved the cat paw blooper! 🙂 My dog knows how to roll over and play dead. But now that he’s a senior dog with back issues, we don’t make him do either. So, come to think of it, I’m not sure if he would still do them!

    • Polly Pocket says

      October 21, 2016 at 5:26 pm

Thank you Rachel! And this trick is great for seniors…it doesn’t require much athletic ability (no balancing or super fast/active movements), so it might be a great one for your boy!

  74. Katie C. says

    October 21, 2016 at 3:01 am

I’m entering to win the gift card for my sister, who is a cat lady! I’m not sure her cats know any tricks, beyond driving her crazy.

    • Polly Pocket says

      October 21, 2016 at 6:13 am

Haha! We have three cats, and while two of them know tricks, the third is 100% just good at driving us crazy too!

  75. Juliet Whitfield says

    October 20, 2016 at 11:12 pm

I adore this! Love the little guys waving. I’m going to teach this to Mick and Romeo. Thanks so much for the inspiration.

    • Polly Pocket says

      October 21, 2016 at 6:14 am

Yay! We’re so glad to hear that! The Wave is truly a fun (and adorable) trick to teach.

my pooch can’t wave, but she can shake!

    • Polly Pocket says

      October 21, 2016 at 5:27 pm

Then you’re already half way to a wave!

  78. AC says

    October 20, 2016 at 8:12 pm

No, never taught my dog this “trick”. He does it anyways when he wants to shake my hand but I’m not paying attention. Though it’s not waving, it’s more so just lifting his arm, as he’s a large golden.

    • Polly Pocket says

      October 21, 2016 at 6:15 am

You’re right, that teaching the Shake first, really helps make it easier to teach the Wave. You’d probably have this in ONE step since you already have a Shake!

  79. carol clark says

    October 20, 2016 at 7:43 pm

my dog doesnt know this one but will teach him

    • Polly Pocket says

      October 21, 2016 at 6:16 am

Yay! We’re so glad you’re going to teach Wave!

  80. Annamarie V says

    October 20, 2016 at 7:00 pm

He does not know this trick, his only tricks are sit, shake and get your pillow.

    • Polly Pocket says

      October 21, 2016 at 6:17 am

Once you’ve taught Shake, it’s really simple to teach wave. Just start rewarding your dog for raising his paw when you’re reaching for a shake before he touches you for a shake. After a few early rewards, he’ll start to get it!

  81. Mary Cloud says

    October 20, 2016 at 6:54 pm

My dogs haven’t learned any tricks yet – we haven’t had a chance to work with them

    • Polly Pocket says

      October 21, 2016 at 6:18 am

Even “sit” counts as a trick. But don’t worry, dogs can learn tricks at any age, so while they love to learn as youngsters, they can learn when older too.

  82. Will G says

    October 20, 2016 at 6:44 pm

My dog does not know this trick.

  83. KateV says

    October 20, 2016 at 6:19 pm

My dogs know it, but I can’t remember exactly how I taught it. Shaping in some form.

    • Polly Pocket says

Yay for positive training methods! We use shaping for a lot of our tricks too!

My dogs shake but not wave. Good idea for another trick though. I will have to try to teach them..

    • Polly Pocket says

      October 21, 2016 at 6:20 am

Wave is even easier to teach if you have Shake first. You’ll have no trouble at all!

I need to teach wave to Nala and Cody it is too cute and results in adorable pictures!

Our dog knows “Shake” which looks close to wave. I wonder if it would be good to transition to “wave” or if it would confuse her.

    • Polly Pocket says

      October 21, 2016 at 6:22 am

It won’t confuse her! Shake is actually a great transition trick to Wave. Just don’t ask for “Shake”, so when you take your hand away to reward without touching, you’re not “faking her out”. You’re simply rewarding early in order to teach a new trick. After a few early rewards you’ll have Wave!

It’s been so long since I taught it I don’t remember if I lured it or shaped it. He does know it though!

my oldest knows lots of tricks, she was a very fast learner, the 2 younger girls know a few, it takes time and being consistent to train to do tricks. my oldest could prance, roll over and play dead, dance, shake, etc. the 2 younger girls just do the normal ones, except the youngest can talk and curl up her lip

My dog knows several tricks so far such as sit, lay, speak, high-five and shake :). I use a very similar method as you to teach him new tricks. We are currently working on teaching him how to call the Hogs (Arkansas Razorbacks).
